'James Arness died last week at the age of 88, a huge movie and television star. But I have memories of “Big Jim” that date back to 1947 and 1948 before he became famous. He would have been 24 or 25 years old then.
'“Big Jim” (as we knew him) was a surfer. When I was about 13-14, my mother and stepfather used to take my sister and I to San Onofre State Beach on the weekends. Several soldiers who had been stationed in Hawaii during World War II had returned to Southern California.
