'The event was one of five on the tour and Kibblewhite, from Red Beach, looks in a good position to defend his national title at Piha – an event which doubles as the second leg of the Hyundai Tour.
'This time last year Kibblewhite won the national title in Dunedin and showed his class again in the open men's longboard event at Manu Bay in Raglan on January 8.
'Kibblewhite made a strong start and built on that to post 16.07 out of a possible 20 points in the final.'
